A6 4F DVD Navigation Disk Read Error Solution

Many people complain from their DVDs being unable to read home-written navigations. The problem is with the DVD reader itself and most specifically the lense. Factory-written disks are of much better quality than ANY of the home DVD writers thus in many cases the original disk the car came with (Europa 2007 for example) works but the new ones – don’t. The solution is replacing the lens of the reader.

WARNING: This is a delicate procedure and if you’re unsure you can do it – get someone who can to do it for you.

New part: I’ve ordered it from China – Aliexpres

If you’re purchasing from somewhere else – make sure it’s of the same type!

Now, here’s how to replace it. It’s fairly trivial procedure but you have to be careful.

  1. Thanks for the great guide. I have a problem with one of the DVD players in the glovebox of my car (linked to screen in front seat headrest). This also shows “disc read err” on every disc inserted. Do you think the same fix could work, or is there a simpler way of cleaning DVD players which should be tried first? DVD player is LTC DVD-352 with slot loading (not tray). Sorry for the cheeky ask…

  2. Hello,
When I look for SF-HD4 I find with black cover, white cover, L shape, straight shape…
Can you please advise on what to look for and what to avoid?
    Thanks

    1. This is the seller’s description of the part that I ordered and fitted:

SF-HD4 pick up lens, 2 trimmers, Straight cable, black cover, original and brand new, for DVD M2 5.6 dvd car mechanism.

It is a bit fiddly to fit but doable with care and patience. You will need T5, T6 and T8 screwdriver type torx tools, and a size 0 cross head screwdriver.
The hardest part for me was removing the frame containing the electronics from the rear of the car; in addition to the three obvious 10mm nuts there is a hidden 10mm headed bolt which is awkward to reach and remove. Once the frame is lifted out the DVD unplugs easily.
Thanks again to A6retrofit for the inspiration and information.

  3. Awesome, you are the man! Also applies for Audi A8 (2003 in my case). Has the same optical drive. Been looking for this tutorial for quite some time. Thanks again!

  4. Hi there,
Thank you for the article. This is exactly my problem. I’m proud owner of A6 Avant Quattro 2005. And it has fortunately only some small issues like this one.
I searched a little and found seller on eBay. The price is lower than on AliExpress and it’s negotiable. See the link: http://r.ebay.com/K3SjFy
I hope that’s the same Lens
